Turkey needs more than luck to oust Germans E-mail

Hang on to celebrations Turkey
Semih Senturk said that the last second goal he scored against Croatia in the quarter finals of the UEFA EURO 2008 is the most priceless goal he has ever scored and will stay with him for the rest of his life. this is the goal that forced the game to go into penalties. One that Croatia lost and enabled Turkey to get into the semi-finals against 3 times champions Germany. Some has coined it luck, while other put it as resilience. Whatever the case, there must be a reason why it happened. And perhaps it was going to be Turkey’s year after all, and if that is what it is going to be, even the might steel Germans can do nothing to stop them. But this is football and sometimes luck can bring you that far. And if luck is anything to go by, perhaps Turkey is running out of it, having used it all in their quarter finals. To begin with, they have less than a fit full team at this juncture. Nine out to injury and suspensions while another 5 unfit, the Turks might just be fielding third goalkeeper might be going out as an outfield player. After all, their first choice keeper Volkan Demirel’s red card stops him from playing any part of the quarter and semi finals respectively, so that leaves the goal mouth to the more experienced Recber Rustu, who did an excellent job keeping the Croats out in their last 8 match.

That which keeps the Turks’ confidence up high at the moment perhaps are the ‘insider’ news they get from Hamit Altintop, who plays along side 5 German players in Bayern Munich. According to Semih Senturk “there are 5 Bayern players in the German side and we’re always talking about them with Hamit and he’ll continue to give information to us about them”.

The five German players are Lukas Podolski, Miroslave Klose, Phillipp Lahm, Marcell Jansen and Bastian Schweinsteiger. But the Germans are not made of 5 players no matter how influential they may be. It is up to the others too, and while Michael Ballack expects a ‘hell of a battle’ in this game, it seems pretty much on paper that this could just favour the stronger Germans. After all, they already have advantage on their side with half the Turkish team available for selection.

It is the one that play as a unit that would perhaps determine this outcome. While the Germans would most likely commit their dead balls into the penalty boxes for headers into goal while coming in through the flanks for any faltering Turkish defence, none can be determined from the other camp. The Turks would have to rely on Kazim Kazim and Semih Senturk to provide the goals. But perhaps, just perhaps, with Altintop at the defence, there just might be some hope for the Turks to hold out a German coming from all ends onslaught and perhaps, just perhaps force another penalty shootout, which would be a less painful way for either side to leave the tournament. whatever the outcome, one can expect a highly charged game, most likely from how Turkey is going to hold on to their fortress from the superiority of the German in terms of height, tactical calls and advantage.
