Trezeguet not going to EURO 2008 E-mail
Monday, 19 May 2008

For all that matters, gone are the days when some players are default additions to a squad. These days, things are hugely different. So that’s what David Trezequet found out. He will not be going to the UEFA EURO 2008 tournament.

The French forward who holds a World Cup and EURO winner medal has not been included in Raymond Domenech’s squad. It came as no surprise as both the coach and the player has not have a good relationship ever since.

Domenech has announced his 30 man provisional squad with another 7 to be dropped when 28 May arrives, the deadline for final list submission. Domenech said that “I would have liked to proceed differently but I had to call more players because nearly half the players on the list still have finals to play”

Trezeguet is somehow the fans favourite where he has played in the squad in 1998 who won the World Cup and in EURO 2000 which was also won by France. He has since scored 34 times in his 71 appearances for the national team, a record he holds third behind legend Michel Platini and Barcelona player Thierry Henry.

Domenech, who has only used Trezeguet five times since the 2006 World Cup defended his exclusion saying that “If you decide to pick four or five centre forwards, you don't have that many options and you have to make choices. It's never easy to wake up having to cross names from a list.”

The player most likely taking over Trezeguet’s duties would be Bafetimbi Gomis, the forward with St Etienne who has since scored 16 goals this season while current European hot pick Karim Benzema had also been favoured.
