 Sverko
The UEFA Euro 2008 kicked off last night with a great and colourful opening ceremony followed by the match between hosts Switzerland vs the Czech Republic. Many would have expected the Swiss to mount a challenge against the Czech, whom many regarded as the stronger team. There were many times when the Swiss managed to break into the Czech defence only to have their efforts disappoint.
One of the worst thing that could happen to the Swiss was losing their most influential player Alexander Frei, who was brought to tears with the injury which will most likely rule him out of the tournament. He was seen later in clutches as he made his way back into the bench. And when Sverkos strike after beating the offside trap to give the Czech Republic the lead, it seems that the Swiss’s nightmare will begin. How they are going to come back from this loss and the loss of their captain for the upcoming games against Turkey and Portugal remains to be seen.
The later game saw a more interesting and attractive football where Portugal face Turkey. The 2004 finalist was on song from the go and was coming towards the turks from all areas. The more organized and disciplined Turks though were resilient and was not easily cracked down having some shots at goals themselves but just couldn’t find the net.
Portugal had the first taste of action when Pepe rose higher than everyone to head in a goal only to be disallowed having ruled offside. But in the 61st minute, it was going to be his night anyhow when he managed to score followed by the second goal by Meireles in the last minute.
The second night beckons, Austria vs Croatia and Germany vs Poland. Choose your pick!
