Torres with the winner
The UEFA EURO 2008 concluded last night with a bang. And a Bang it was. By Fernando Torres. One shot. That was what it took for Spain to be crowned Champions of Europe. It was a night to be savoured. And many said that the match was perhaps one of the most friendliest competitive final ever. As a matter of fact, one cannot deny that the tournament had been one of the friendliest to begin with. There were almost zero hooliganism and a lot of shaking hands and such. But one thing that went missing this time perhaps were the changing of jerseys, one that has elevated to club level these days. But the story was on the pitch. With David Villa out with an injury, it was the country’s burden hanging on Torres as the sole provider of goals from the start whistle. He took it at the chin and came out tops, one could say. While he has had a bad campaign so far, he more or less made it all up in the final. Villa was in his action gear to begin with, sitting on the bench as if he would be ready to come on if needed, but that was deemed unnecessary. With 20 minutes gone, it was El Nino who climbed higher than any other towering German player to head the onto goal, only to be denied by the post. It is almost a jinx to have hit the post when it comes to luck. But Torres denied everything logical and illogical, when at the stroke of 33 minutes, he race pass the offside trap, chip in the ball towards the onward running Lehmann and the side by side marking of Phillip Lahm. Typical Torres. Typical goal, Typical Torres Goal. If you had followed Torres’ career, you will know what I mean.

The second half saw more action as the Germans, not to be denied a losing final tried to come back, but it was either the runs were lackluster or they were merely tired, whatever the case, as spoken, it was like the rats out-mischieving the Elephants, Spain was all over the place. Their fluid passing and fast attacking moves were the highlights of the day, letting Germany succumbing to their own mismanagement of possession. At the end of the day, it was Spain who came up with more chances and definitely more flair.

Whatever anyone say, it was a night when the Spaniards exorcised the old ghost of the past. It was 44 years overdue and it came in all due respected method. Controlling a game, not merely defending, attacking all the way, it was a typical Spanish styled final. Germany was at times not present but they put up a good fight. Ballack was influential in midfield but the midfield definitely belonged to the midfield controlled by Iniesta and the very glamorously running Xavi and Cazorla.

And when Iker Casillas held the trophy high up against the Austrian skies to put the cap onto the tournament, there was a tear on almost every Spanish player. For they have come thus far, 22 games unbeaten, convincing and commanding, it is as if they are looking forward to others now. After all, they’ve conquered Europe, now for the world.
