Portugal announced their final 23 man squad for the UEFA EURO 2008 tournament without midfielder Maniche. National coach Luiz Felipe Scolari announced his squad without one of the main player in the EURO 2004 although his brother Jorge Ribeiro, who plays for Boavista FC was included.

Maniche had an excellent outing at EURO 2004 when the tournament was held in Portugal but saw him being far from match fit, failing to get a permanent spot at Inter Milan since arriving from Atletico Madrid. He also played in the 2006 World Cup and appeared 8 times in the qualifiers for this tournament. His brother, has been playing regularly in Boavista, where he scored 8 goals in total of his 26 appearances for the club.

Scolari has included a new face, offering Sporting Clube de Portugal Rui Patricio his first cap. Also included in the squad are Joao Moutinho, Muguel Veloso and Helder Postiga. Scolari said that "My expectations are the same as those that I had in 2004. I hope these players know what it means to represent their country well and reach the second stage. I have total belief in this squad."

The national team will meet from 19 May until the 31^st at Viseu where they will be centralizing training where a friendly against Georgia is set up to conclude the session at EStadio do Fontelo. They then go over to the host country at Neuchatel where they are grouped with Czech Republic, Turkey and co-host Switzerland.
