 Italy Captain Fabio Cannavaro
It was some very bad news for the Italian team heading towards the UEFA EURO 2008 tournament. the world champions, in their quest to complete a double, had just confirmed that their captian, Fabio Cannavaro will not be in the squad to help them get there as he was down with an ankle injury.
Cannavaro, who was the captain when Italy won the World Cup, twisted his ankle in training. The World Player of the year collided with Giorgi Chiellini. The 32 year old defender then underwent some treatment on the pitch for a while and subsequently had to be stretchered off before heading to the medical center.
Test results shown that the Real Madrid defender torn his ankle ligaments and as such, won’t be featured in any part of the EURO. The Italian Football Federation announced then that, “The news we feared was confirmed in Baden late on Monday evening.
Fabio Cannavaro will say goodbye to our European adventure, before it has even begun. The captain has suffered torn ligaments, which happened the moment his foot made contact with the ground. His ankle twisted awkwardly.” To take his place, Alessandro Gamberini, who plays for Fiorentina has been called for duty.
