The Netherlands has included Khalid Boulahrouz from Sevilla FC in their provisional squad headed for the UEFA EURO 2008. There are also an additional of 4 players who will not be making the cut. They are AFC Ajax defender Urby Emanuelson, Kew Jaliens of AZ Alkmaar, Valencia CF's Hedwiges Maduro and PSV Eindhoven striker Danny Koevermans. The four players were originally included in the 30 man squad and as the deadline looms ahead. Marco van Basten will have to cut his team members down.
Boulahrouz, who previously played in Chelsea was not a name in the original list but Van Basten has included the defender as he has had a string of good results since returning from injury.
Other usual suspects include Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Arjen Robben will all be checking into training camp. The final list will be submitted to UEFA before the 28 May, the deadline for final list submissions. They will be having some friendly games coming up aginast the likes of Denmark, Ukraine and Wales before heading to Austria and Switzerland where they are scheduled to play world champions Italy in their first game.
As reported, 17 year old Barcelona player Bojan Krkic will not be included in the squad after he requested for rest. He said that he and national team coach has came to an agreement to have him rested after a year long of matches in the LaLiga. He said "I know what it is I'm missing out on but I've reached a point where I'm very tired. At no point did I ever say 'no' to the Spanish team. On the other hand, I want to be honest with the manager, the [Spanish Football] Federation and with myself."
Bojan has not stopped playing since socring the winning goal in the Under 17 EURO in May 2007 where he was then summoned for pre-season training with his club. After that, he was in Korea for the Under 17 World Cup before continuing his club games.
Bojan has iterated that this does not mean he is not commited to the national team. He said "My commitment to the Spanish set-up can't be called into doubt when you consider that I have always played when I have been called upon to do so. I played at a [UEFA] European Championship and a [FIFA] World Cup at Under-17 level and took part in three or four games with the Under-21s. There are no personal problems, I'm just exhausted and I need to disconnect."
