Tuesday, 20 May 2008

While the Italian team is preparing for the upcoming UEFA EURO 2008, one single player is up and running, staking his claims among the greats of the Italian national team. Coach Roberto Donadoni is in the midst of preparing his team for the friendlies and while he is doing so, forward Luca Toni is already planning to use EURO 2008 as his stage to show the world what he is worth and what he can do.

The striker from Bayern Munich would most likely be featured as he is in the provisional list for hte tournament which will then be shortlisted again to 23 names on 28 May. Italy is grouped with fellow World Cup finalists France, Romania and the Netherlands. Luca Toni, in relishing his chance in the national team said that "We will go there to win another trophy. Our group is really tough but we'll do our best to show our quality."

The 30 year old player, who moved from Fiorentina last summer has scored 24 goals for his new club in the 31 total games. At a higher level, he is also the joint top scorer in the UEFA Cup with 10 goals a piece with Pavel Pogrebnyak. Even with his confidence high, he is sure that competing for places would not be easy as there are too many good players to choose from. He commented that "Picking this squad is difficult for Donadoni because there are so many good players in Italy. It will be hard to pick some while leaving others out. But we will have a really competitive squad and that can only help our performances."

Up front for Italy, Donadoni is sure to have some headaches as Toni is on fire at the moment. He can also opt for the more experienced figures like Alessandro Del Piero and Filippo Inzaghi while the others like Antonio Cassano and Tommaso Rocchi are all vying for a place in the tournament.
