| KICK OFF EURO!!! |
|
| Saturday, 07 June 2008 | |
Its kick off time in Switzerland as the UEFA EURO 2008 Finals goes underway starting tonight. This would be the biggest football tournament this year after a Manchester United dominant English Premier League which saw them winning the UEFA Champions League as well. Suffice to say, they only have 3 players who are playing in the tournament, the illustrious Cristiano Ronaldo and countryman Nani while Edwin Van Der Sar, their goalkeepers are still very much in the hoops within the post for Netherlands. Most would be missing the likes of the English team this time around, but it is refreshing too that they are not here as we can be more neutral in most sense. England gives you that obligatory sense to wish they will win but without them playing, some other team would take center stage. The Favourites - Germany, Italy, France, Spain and Netherlands. The favourites of the tournament, as reported widely would be the Germans with great balance and determination around the team. The Germans are known to be the most organized team in the world. Of course one cannot discounts world champions Italy, although playing without Cannavaro, they still have a team capable of winning anyone on the good days. The French seemed a pale shadow of their team when led by Zidane, but they too have the world qualities of Henry and Ribery. Spain, always the under-achievers in international tournaments. They have quality all around the team, but often see themselves out of tournaments before the semis. The last time they won was more than 40 years back. The Oranje, as anyone can expect might just be their year this time around. The likes of Huntelaar, van Nistelrooy and Robben who has been playing exceptionally well, might just give the favourites a run for their money. The Challengers – Portugal, Czech Republic, Romania, Sweden Portugal, the finalist last time around would always be remembered for their upsetting of England in the last two tournaments. Their group is seen as one of the easier ones and many would want to see Ronaldo performing his best in this level. The Czech Republic, have a great all round team and would be able to finish second in their group at least. The Romanians and the Swedish are well organized and highly disciplined teams. Sweden is boosted with the return of Henrik Larsson. The Hosts – Switzerland and Austria. While Switzerland, to many would be one of the hosts who would go far, Austria is lucky not to be grouped with too many big guns, which might give them a fighting chance to advance if they can overcome the likes of Poland and Croatia. The Underdogs – Turkey, Croatia and Greece Out of the three, perhaps Croatia would have the best chance after the so convincingly beat England at Wembley thereby sending them out of the tournament altogether. Greece is trying to show the world that winning the EURO the last time around is no fluke while Turkey would have an outside chance to get through really. The Outsiders – Russia and Poland Poland would need this experience as this is their first time playing in EURO while Russia, with Hiddink being his arrogant self believe his team can go far, but on paper, that would most likely not happen. The opening ceremony will be followed by the kick off game between Switzerland and Czechoslovakia. Many would be expecting the Swiss to mount a challenge as they are playing host, but on paper, this would most likely be a draw game. The later game is between Portugal and Turkey, many would be interested to see if World player of the year Ronaldo can convert his club form to the international level. While Turkey has had a great outing 2 tournaments ago, they probably would not be able to win the Portuguese. |
