Croatia goes through to last 8
Surprise! Surprise! Was it actually such a surprise that Germany actually lost to Croatia. To say the least, it was Croatia who was more creative, and to a certain extend more serious about winning the game. For a long period of time, Germany barely got into the game while Croatia was attacking from the word ‘go’. This would otherwise be a Germany win if not for their forwards made up from Podolski and Klose who could not convert. And it would have to be the Croats who drew first blood when Srna tapped in a first timer. At the stroke of the hour, Croatia was 2 nil up. It was something that was going to happen sooner or later, considering that Croatia had most of the chances. Germany managed to pull one back through Lukas Podolski but was just too little too late. Germany now has to win their last game to get to the quarter finals while Croatia are there already. Austria kept the hosts hopes intact when they came back from 1 goal down to equalize against Poland. They still have an outside chance of making the last eight, unlike co-host Switzerland whose hopes are all but finished. Poland took the lead through Roger Guerreiro in the 30th minute and when it all seemed to be heading towards a one nil victory, Austria had a stroke of luck when a penalty was awarded deep, deep into stoppage time. Ivica Vastic made sure he score from the spot in the 93rd minute to send the Austrians to the last game of the group, where they will be facing Germany, who must win that game to get through. So tonight, its back to the Group of Death, and what better day to have them but Friday the 13th.

Game 1 – Italy vs Romania – Flair vs System

The flair and skills of the Italian could just be their own undoing this tournament after losing to Netherlands and they need to pick themselves up, and win this if they are to get through to the last eight. Anything less than a win will see themselves going home early. The more systematic approach of the Romanians could just contain the Italian onslaught of Del Piero and Luca Toni and while Romania’s front line could bear some threat, it won’t be easy to break through Italy’s defence. Having said that, the Italian’s back for of Zambrotta, Grosso, BArzagli and Chiellini might just be having the worst time to drop form. Romania should be able to nick a point, although an upset could be likely.

Game 2 – Netherlands vs France – Modern vs Traditional

The Oranje is playing one of the most exciting football in the tournament. for a moment there, it seems that Total Football is back with the Dutch, where every department seemed to be able to play at almost any position. The more conventional and traditional French team are still playing their usual game, building up from defence to move into attack which to many is outdated. The Dutch, on their day can give any team a runaround and if the French keeps their current tactics, might find the Orange team getting the better of them.
