Winning the ball - Torres
When Fernando Torres scored the goal for Spain in the UEFA Euro 2008 final game against Germany, there were some who thought that could be the winning goal of the tournament while some quarters felt that the Germans had what it takes to come back with an equalizer and perhaps a winner as well. Well, anything could have happened and it was until the final whistle could anyone believe that the solitary goal from the player known as ‘the Kid’ would be the deciding factor of the tournament, that is crowning Spain as the European Champions, so much so that all else of the continent would have to accept that fact, at least for the next 4 years or so. The thing about these type of tournaments which takes place once every 4 years, even if Spain is to lose to Germany in the World Cup 2 years from now, Spain would still bear the title of ‘defending champions’ in four years’ time in Poland and Ukraine. And for the next 4 years or so, it would have been the Torres goal that brought victory to Spain, so much so that they have waited for 44 years for the trophy. Perhaps, they have been waiting 44 years for El Nino to arrive, and arrive he did, in extravagant fashion. There were 4 other Premier Leagues mates who played in the national team along side Torres, namely Cesc Fabregas who is in the rival club Arsenal FC, while 3 others are club mates Xabi Alonso, defender Arveleo Arbeloa and goalkeeper Pepe Reina. Alonso, who would have gotten used to the striker’s role in Liverpool FC day in day out have the utmost respect for him, tipping him on to greater things, perhaps as the world’s best player. he said "It was a great strike from Fernando and on Sunday he showed he is the man who performs on the big nights. That goal has been key. He can be the best player in the world. Winning against Germany is a massive step for him and for us."

Fabregas believe that Torres is already at the pinnacle of the world, perhaps its just a matter of time before he gets his recognition. "Yes, Fernando can be the best in the world. This is about the Spanish team and not the individual performance but I told him the final would be his game and he would score - and he got that goal."

This could be the start to greater things, really. For scoring 33 goals in his debut season, he was close to being voted World Footballer of the year, which went to Cristiano Ronaldo. That is for his illustrious performance for Manchester United, but look what the awards have brought the Portuguese in Euro. Ronaldo seemed more concerned about his ‘dream’ of playing for Real Madrid and the ongoing tussle between club coach Sir Alex Ferguson that he was probably dreaming while playing for Portugal. They were outplayed and was a mere shadow of their runners up past.

So it’s back to club football for Torres and co. its now back to the drawing board after the celebration and the confetti that comes with it, its back down to business. Liverpool FC, in keeping their gem by all means, will be adding more spice to their attack, perhaps another creative midfielder who can provide the pass to Torres for a finish of the season.

Torres, whose first medal since joining the English club is the European Champions medal will now be hunting for more. While last season was a lot of ‘nearly’s and ‘almost’s, perhaps this time he could finish the job, for club and country.
