EURO 08- Second Round - Portugal cruising E-mail

Going into the last 8
Portugal got the second round of the UEFA EURO 2008 tournament underway with a convincing win over the Czech Republic after a nervy start. The first half saw the Portuguese team shaking in defence as the Czechs came from all sides trying to sign their name on the scoresheet. There was no Koller and Milan Baros was put in to replace, which he did with his fast pace and electrifying runs but they found themselves 1 goal down when Deco scored at the other end. The Czechs pulled level to head into half time all square. The second half have Ronaldo rejuvenated scoring the second goal and the Czechs went down with a 3-1 score line. But its not over yet for them as they still have to play hosts Switzerland, whose tournament ended after losing to Turkey 2-1. The second game saw Turkey coming from behind after being one goal down to kick the co-host out of the tournament. most would agree that Switzerland’s tournament ended when they lost Frei, but they were keen to dismiss that fact by taking the lead but saw themselves losing to Turkey via a stoppage time goal. Poor luck, some might say.

Tonight would have another favourite vying for the quarter final spot.

Germany vs Croatia : Favourites vs Underdogs

The Germans did not play as good as many would like them to against Poland although they did win by 2 goals to nothing. The test tonight will be way harder with England killers Croatia up to make their mark as no fluke. Croatia, who only scored a penalty against Austria will be looking to give the Germans a run for their money. Perhaps the favourites among the underdogs to get far, they will surely be mounting a strong challenge to the Germans. While the Germans are organized and well structured, the Croats would most likely be playing a more risky forward game while maintaining their defence to hold off the Germans as long as possible.

Austria vs Poland: Hopefuls vs Hopefuls.

Both teams are hoping one would fall for the other a slim chance to qualify for the quarter finals, with Switzerland out of the next round, co-host Austria who were no hoppers from the start and who managed to hold off Croatia for long time in a game would go all out to win the Polish in this one, but will probably find the Polish a step better than them. If Poland should win, they probably win by a small 1 goal margin, otherwise, this would most likely be a dull goalless draw sort of game.
