Croatia heartache, crashes out on penalties E-mail

Turkey will meet Germany in Semis
Another quarter final, another casualty, another one out. Another one in, another upset and another one ready to take the fight. The game between Turkey and Croatia would have otherwise be a one way affair which Croatia could have easily won and taken control, considering their better record against the Turks who struggled in the first phases of the tournament. But it was a night when Turkey played their hearts out, knowing if they can contain the Croats to as few chance as possible, then they might be nick in something from their counter attacks or perhaps through luck, which they had in abundance. But it was Turkey who played much better than the Croats in all departments. No doubt Croatia took the few chances that they had but apart from the shot that hit the crossbar and some nearly chances, there really isn’t much to shout about from the Croatia camp. Gone were the confident move and passes when they played Germany.

Turkey too had their chances but the Croatia defence proved too strong. And both teams could barely find the net. And as if, the strikers forgotten where the net was, it was only in extra time that Croatia managed to find the net. Their goal came in the last minute of extra time. It was in the 119th minute that Croatia scored the goal, only to have Turkey equalized 1 minute later. And if heartache were not enough, penalty beckons, which in the end favoured the Turks. So it was a cruel blow for Croatia, who had the semi-final berth snatched from them from under 1 minute of play and then on penalties.

QF 3 – Netherlands vs Russia

With so much drama happening in the first 2 Quarter finals, the possibility of an upset might be in the cards, but the convincing Oranje should be superior to the wide attacking flair of the Russians. Do not discount Guus Hiddink though of his knowledge of the game, his knowledge of huge tournaments like this, his knowledge of bringing underdogs further than anyone can imagine, and perhaps more dangerously speaking, his knowledge of the Dutch Team, one that he coached before.

If nothing goes wrong, this could be Holland’s game, but an upset could be likely, afterall, this is EURO 2008.
