Wenger ready for Moment of Truth E-mail
Wednesday, 02 April 2008

Tonight’s all English match up for the Champions League Quarter finals 1st leg would see Arsene Wenger’s team beating “everybody in the world” or so it seems. Deemed as the “moment of truth”, it would be a classic game that would face two of the most exciting teams in the Premiership.

The first of the 3 consecutive games would be played at Emirates Stadium which according to Wenger will begin their final stake for the season. The next 4 games will pretty much determine if they are to get anything this season or end it trophyless.

After the 3 games against Liverpool, they will be playing Manchester United at Old Trafford a daunting tasks for which he will have to be tactful as well as prudent in launching his squad.

This is of course after the last game where the Gunners came from 2 goals down to win the tie 2-3 at the Reebok with 10 men. The Gunners last appeared in the finals of the Champions League 2 seasons ago against Barcelona, who trailed them by 1 goal and eventually winning the final 2-1. Ever since that, talismanic striker Thierry Henry had gone over to the Nou Camp to ply his trade there.

Wenger said that”We feel we can beat them and that is the most important thing. On the day, it is about producing a good performance. If we do - I am convinced we will - we can beat Liverpool, Milan, everybody in the world. I want them to play without any restrictions, with no fear. Just with belief that we are a great side and we can achieve it. I believe in my team. Is it better or less good, I let you judge. But I believe in the way we play the game and in our quality.”

On the other hand, it is business as usual for the Reds, who will be looking to salvage their season with the only trophy left. Their title hopes have since faded with the defeat to bitter rivals Man Utd, out of the FA Cup courtesy of Barnsley and out of the Carling Cup losing to Chelsea. But like most pundits and critics, European games are normally very different for the Reds and all eyes would be on the Gerrard Torres partnership, who both almost out shut the Toffees during last week’s Premiership derby. Even Wenger believe that Torres is an important player for the Reds and is a dangerous prospect. To say the least, Torres would more or less be the make or break of Liverpool in this match up, most likely in both legs.

Wenger commented that “Torres has done extremely well. Even in Spain, he didn't score as many goals as he does now. We know we have to keep him quiet.Gerrard can hit long balls when they win the ball back, especially to Babel. Basically, when they get crosses in for Torres, he is dangerous.”
