Man Utd lifts their first trophy this season It would be their third trophy ever since they so convincingly wrestled the Premier League title and the UEFA Champions League from Chelsea FC, Manchester United added another trophy to their cabinet of silverware when they beat Portsmouth FC in the Community Shield.
Although there are not much bearing on the season, it is often seen as the curtain opener for the new 2008/2009 season of the Barclay’s Premier League for the Red Devils, and a heartbreak for Pompey who despite putting up a decent performance against United in regulation time of the game, lost out through penalties.
It would be their own fault, considering that Portsmouth could not covert 3 of the spot kicks and only Jermain Defoe managed to score. Playing without some influential title winning team players, Sir Alex Ferguson side still managed to maintain their class and perhaps some quality of title holders as they kept their composure to win their first trophy.
Portsmouth fielded the usual suspects with David James between the posts, Sol Campbell and Silvain Distin at the back while Defoe and new signing Peter Crouch led the attack. But it was a night when James were on top form in regulation play while could do nothing more to contain the goals through penalties on a night of the game watched by England manager Fabio Capello, Cristiano Ronalod and Wayne Rooney.
There weren’t many drama in the game where both teams played quite ‘safely’ perhaps in view of the upcoming season starter next week and some dubious calls for penalty turned down and most of their wishes only came true after 90 minutes.
