Lord Coe the chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games has announced publicly that he would be backing Sir Alex Ferguson as the head coach for the Great Britain football team come the 2012 Olympics. He had confirmed that so far, some informal chats and discussions have been made between himself and the Man Utd coach but has yet to reveal any new findings in their talks. None so had been revealed on whether the coach is interested or not. Lord Coe mentioned that “I would love to see Alex coach the team. I can't think of anybody that frankly (more) deserves at the end of a stunning career to be in charge of young players here. I've spoken to Alex. We know each other. We're good friends.” The Chelsea fan spoke about the conversation some two months back which Sir Alex was pretty casual about the offer. He seemed to be interested and yet reluctant as it might disrupt his work at Man UTd. Chelsea fan Coe's bid to land Ferguson first came to light two months ago, at which time United expressed a relaxed attitude about the approach. Great Britain last entered the Olympic qualifying tournament with an amateur team was in 1972. So far, the talk is on the opposing of the move by The Scottish and Wales FA who fear that if Britain is entered via one ticket, they might lose their voting rights. Lord Coe has since iterated that the door would always be ‘open’ for both the FAs to relax their stands. He said “I clearly want the best players - wherever they come from Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England - to be there. But I also recognise it is an issue for the individual football associations and the door is open.” |
