Let the Premiership Champion Come Forth E-mail
Wednesday, 07 May 2008

Chances are, both Chelsea and Manchester United will win their remaining game come this weekend. Chances are, they could just both draw their game. Chances are Chelsea would win and Man Utd might just lose, and chances are Chelsea be crowned champions. But nothing is left to chance. It is he who rises to the occasion that would make or break this season. While Chelsea has now an easier route as they entertain Bolton at the Bridge, it is up to Man Utd to win their last away game at the JJB where Wigan awaits. And who else but Sir Alex Ferguson’s protégé Steve Bruce who will be up against his former boss and his former team.

If favours are anything to go by, it would be Wigan doing the Red Devils some favours. It would be time for pay back from Bruce to Sir Alex. It is as easy as that, the ball is now at Wigan’s court. While they have nothing else to play for, all they need to do is to field a second team, or one that is inferior to the Red Devils, and the season is over.

In London however, it is a different ball game. Bolton need to win their remaining game to hold on to whatever they have left to survive this campaign. They need 3 points to guarantee survival in the top flight, and they will be going all out. But the resilient Blues will not be an easy prey. They will not give away one point, what with 3 points are at stake. What with the title is at stake. This is as big as it will get. Ask Liverpool, they know how hard it is to get anything at Stamford Bridge. Furthermore, the Blues are in top form at the moment.

Avram Grant is fast to outline the fact that English football has its own characteristics and integrity, so much so that he believe that Bruce will not easily hand the title to Man Utd. Not in this manner. Such is his uncertainty and to some extend, his mind games with the more experienced Sir Alex, who a week ago, had the cushion of beating West Ham after manager Alan Curbishley publicly admitted that he would prefer Man Utd to win the title.

This would be the first time since 1968 that the top two teams finish the season on equal points, and that was when Man Utd neighbor rivals Man City pipped the Devils for the top division title then. If both teams finish with equal points, Chelsea would lose out due to goal difference, which means the Blues must win their game at least by 18 goals. There would be no early kickoff for any teams this week. All teams play simultaneously, which means that everyone must play their best, win their games and hope that the other teams lose theirs. The Premiership concludes this weekend, a champion will emerge, 2 more teams will be drowned to the Championship with Derby already there, 2 more teams will sweat it out for another UEFA Cup spot, the Golden Boot winner will come forth (most likely to be Cristiano Ronaldo) and a season ends with much fanfare.
