Sheffield United suffered the cruelest of cruel blow last night in the FA Cup replay against Middlesbrough. How bad can it get to be kicked out of the tournament, but to score an own goal after hanging on for the full 90 minutes and playing away. Paddy Kenny, the goalkeeper did everything right and 1 thing wrong on a night that could have gone into penalties. The 29 year old keeper, was trying to carelessly keep the deflection out from Mido when he pushed it into the back of his net. This would have been a cruel awakening for the keeper who in the earlier part of the game managed to shut out efforts by Alves, Downing, Young and Sanli. Of all the chances, James Beattie could have nicked it for the visitors in the last minute of open play but saw his shot crawl out of sight. There were chances after chances for Boro, including Alves’ unmarked opportunity in the 9th minute. Downing’s one-two with Rochemback could have been fruitful but ended in futility as well. But a man who scored 49 goals in as many games for previous club Heerenveen was never likely to dwell on that miss or to have to wait long for another opportunity, and his chance duly arrived 10 minutes before the break. On the other side, Sheffield had their chances although they were mostly defending their side most of the time, which they have done so well. Extra time loomed and as pressure start mounting and legs beginning to get tired, one mistake was all it took to cost Sheffield their one shot at silverware when Mido’s deflected shot nicked a touch from Kenny and ended at the back of the net among the 20 odd thousand filled stadium of roars. Boro will next face Cardiff in the quarterfinals.
