The focus over in Italy had its own nail-biting finish as Inter Milan maintained their composure this time around to claim the Serie A title. Talismanic striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic returned to action after being laid off for 2 months due to injury lifted Internazionale to the title, scoring 2 goals in the second half in the process.
It was going to be a half to be remembered forever as the other game between Catania and AS Roma was going to influence the outcome of the title, one way or another. At half time, Roma lead Catania 1-0. Inter and Palermo were still without a goal. If that result ended that way, Roma would have been the champions. In the second half, the Swede took his place in the game, and with that, took his place among the legends. He scored twice, at the 62nd minute and then again at the 79th minute. This would be Inter Milan’s 16th title, and with that completed their hattrick of becoming Italian Champions. The result too affected all the opponents as Parma is now relegated to Serie B while Catania survived. Despite an attacking first half, Inter was unable to penetrate the Parma defence and only until when Ibrahimovic was introduced that things began to change for the better, and with his introduction came the first goal and the eventual winner which will see the club get their hands on the title. So the honours at the Italian Serie A are: Champions: Internazionale Milan Runners Up: AS Roma Champions League qualification: Juventus & Fiorentina UEFA Cup: AC Milan Sampdoria Relegated: Empoli, Parma and Livorno Top Scorer: Alessandro Del Piero from Juventus (21 Goals) |
