Hull will travel to Wembley for the first time to play Bristol City in what would be the ticket to the lucrative Premier League. Four goals by Nick Barmby, Caleb Folan, Richard Garcia and Nathan Doyle helped the club set up their first every game in their 104 years history for the play off final. Watford scored early with a goal by Darius Henderson only to have former Liverpool FC player Nick Barmby equalize. Folan then came on from the bench to score Hull’s second goal to add to the tally and the misery of Watford. It was more or less a one way game with Garcia and Doyle adding one goal each to cement their trip to Wembley. After that, it was pitch invasion all over. Team coach Phil Brown took over the club in December 2006. At that time, the club was in a loss and was drowning into relegation. He then turned the tides to lift the club to safety in the Championship. One season later, they are in the brink of a move higher up the ladder onto the Premier League. Barmby and Dean Windass, players from Hull City were the heroes as they have scored over the two legs that help them set up the play off finals. Watford on the other end, would definitely rue their chances as they could have sealed their second and the automatic spot to promotion if not for their string of bad runs towards the end of the season, where they only managed 1 win in 16 games. Hull came into the second leg with a 2 goal cushion from the first leg where they convincingly beat Watford with a 2-0 margin. But it was the visitors who were more hungry and Hull found themselves 1 goal down after 12 minutes courtesy of Henderson. With a goal this early, most would fear the worst for the home club as Watford presses on. Home boy Windass nearly scored with a long shot but had his shot over the cross bar later. It was Watford though that gave the goal away after a weak clearance dropped to Garcia who looped it forward only to meet Barmby to hit the ball in. the score remains 1-1 until half time. The second half started with Hull being more comfortable and definitely more confident. Watford continued to press while Hull brought in Folan, who headed in the next goal for the home side to confidently call the tie theirs. And with 2 minutes left of regulation time, Garcia made it 3-1 and one minute later, Hull was celebrating their goal and the ticket to Wembley. |
