Manchester City coach Sven-Goran Eriksson completed his tour with the team to the far east and will return to England to find out what will happen to him. This is not a new issue as it has been long talked about especially with City owner Thaksin Shinawatra voicing his displeasure with the team’s performance this season, although they have done exceptionally well.
Eriksson was previously with the City team in on a promotional Asia tour where they lost to the Thailand Premier All-Star and South China Invitational 11 in Hong Kong, which City lost both games 3-1. Owner Thaksin was present to watch the club he owned lose to the football team from his native country which would have probably made it harder for Thaksin to re-consider keeping the Swede on the job.
Eriksson said though that he now has his mind on a break instead of thinking about what’s to happen next to him. He said “It has been a very, very long season for all of us, especially for a lot of young players and a lot of new players in the Premier League. I think everybody looks forward to a break now.'
Manchester City, although finishing the season ninth, one spot higher than the original target of 10th, will be playing in UEFA Cup next season through the Fair Play League, but even if this is so, it might not be good enough to keep him at the job.
The trip to Thailand were not the full team as some of the senior players had to stay back for the upcoming EURO 2008 while some were injured. Eriksson have to bring in his youth players which is very confident on. He said “City has always had good young players and the youth team won the FA Youth Cup, beating Chelsea, and the future is good. In the squad, I believe that someone has the chance, but I suppose it depends very much on pre-season.One or two, maybe all of them, will have the chance in the future.”
