Drama at the Premier League - Gallas for the Oscar E-mail
Wednesday, 27 February 2008

A school of thought went on that William Gallas should be the one who should be banned from playing football again. For it has been a BIG disgrace for someone of his stature and built to be sitting on the field, sobbing tears as if he just lost the World Cup. Such histrionics somehow brought the game the high profile game to shame. No one really knew just why he cried. But it didn’t seemed to matter as the highlight of the game was the horrifying injury that Eduardo faced. His career at stake, his well being in question, his emotional distress that can be so badly damaged, and we haven’t yet talked about how painful it was going to be. Perhaps it was the stoppage time penalty that caused Gallas to cry, which eventually turned out to be game saving action for Birmingham. But then again, it was a DRAW game, Arsenal did not lose.

This is where the captain has to pull the team together. After the injury, Arsenal seemed to be almost directionless, often seemed to be chasing the ball around the Birmingham players, one point need to be stressed here, Birmingham played with 10 men for most of the game, and they were pretty much in control. So where was the Arsenal captain? He was not anywhere to be found, and instead when he was finally visible to the human eyes, he was kicking the advertising board, he was shielding away from his teammates and most certainly, he was sitting on the pitch, as if Arsenal has just been relegated, crying pathetically.

This is incredible stuff, no wonder it is called the Premier League. Things happen at the highest level and you have no idea what to expect. Such things should be left at the theaters, such melodramatic heroics should just be left at home, not here where people from all over the world are watching. Perhaps he needed to show people just that he is an emotional person, but there is a time and place for everything. You cry when you won the Player of the Year Award, you cry when you lose the Champions League Final, you cry when you miss a penalty in the World Cup Finals, you cry when you see your first born son, you cry in pain if you just suffered a horrific tackle, BUT, you most certainly definitely DON’T cry when you draw a game due to a last minute penalty, you most certainly definitely DON’T cry when the team you captained is trying to be strong because a team mate was injured, you most certainly definitely DON’T cry when, as captain, your team just managed to create a 6 point gap at the pinnacle of the most competitive league in the world. Where has all the able captains gone to Mr Wenger? For all that matters, Gallas is definitely not one of them because to lead by example, you most certainly definitely DON’T frown when your teammates did play to their best they could because some terrible event took place during the match. Go home, cry baby.
