The Magic of the FA Cup continues. And it is one of the biggest upsets ever. As much as one would like to see, one thing for sure, the FA Cup landscape this season is crazier than ever. There are 2 Premiership teams left in the competition, Portsmouth who is in the semifinals and Middlesbrough who will play Cardiff later today. The landscape came in the wake of successful Premiership scalps collected by Barnsley, who beat Liverpool at Anfield and then went on to beat, of all teams, Chelsea with a 1 goal margin.
Portsmouth on the other hand beat Manchester United, subsequently killing off any of their Treble hopes this season. This is as good as it gets for Portsmouth and a wee bit off for the Red Devils who have not gotten the luck they need in the world’s oldest football competition. They have so far met Premiership teams in coming to the quarters. And Portsmouth gave them a game which might sound controversial. It matters not the manner of the win, but to come off a penalty goal at Old Trafford would be as much as any lower team could dream of. And to kick them off the competition, that would be a bonus.
And to complete the upsets of the night, Barnsley’s Kayode Odejayi jumped high above everyone and also Chelsea goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini to head home the winner and send the club into mayhemic raptures. How else could a magical dream go on for a team lower than them, more so the big 4. the giant killers have now 2 big names under their wing, and the believe in the team would now be sky high. They now epitomizes the romance and beauty of the FA Cup, and they will definitely not be written off anytime yet. Go Barnsley! |
