Chelsea strolls into the Quarter finals E-mail
Thursday, 06 March 2008

Many saw this as the game that would pretty much sum up Avram Grant’s job at Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea’s players more or less made up their mind that he should stay on, at least for a little while. They turned up and beat Greek team Olympiacos 3 goals without reply.

On a day when Salomon Kalou netted a goal while Frank Lampard and Michael Ballack scored one each, the game was merely a walk in a park for the home side. The nature of such games would only further strengthen the confidence of the Blues who got their first goal of the night early on. Resting their main players Michael Essien and Petr Cech, their reserve keeper Carlo Cudcini had his defence to thank because he barely broke a sweat for the first half.

Most of the action took place on the other side of the field though with Ballack scoring in the 5th minute. That pretty much cancelled out whatever hopes the Greeks had in coming to London after their goal less first leg match before Lampard tapped in the second goal at the quarter hour mark.
