it could not get better than this for Tottenham Hotspur when they came from 1 goal down to beat who else but Chelsea in the Carling Cup Final. The London derby promised a classic game with Spurs who have not beaten the Blues for as long as 18 years. The last time they beat Chelsea in a cup final was the FA Cup 41 years ago. this is not the first London club Spurs overcame to win the title, they deservingly beat Arsenal in the semi-finals 5 goals to 1 to get there. the atmosphere at the new Wembley was electrifying and it was going to be a close game, Lampard who said, "It will be a very difficult game, considering Tottenham are in good form and they are very excited to be in a final against Chelsea. We have to make sure we're on guard, as they have a lot of threats in their team going forward." Tottenham coach was on the reverse, exuding much confidence after beating Arsenal, who believed that they can go all the way, he said, "This is the same team that beat Arsenal three weeks ago, so it is capable of winning." In the most normal of circumstances, Chelsea was the favourite to win it as they would be superior in most areas, but a cup final is a cup final. one would expect anyone to rise to the occasion, which Tottenham did, with superb fashion. This would be Spurs' first trophy in 9 years, in 1999, the too won the League Cup. Spurs played with Ledley King captaining the team. Keane and Berbatov played up front with new signing Jonathan Woodgate doing what he do best, hold the fortress. No matter what the case, Chelsea's own attacking combination of Anelka, Drogba and Wright-Phillips with Lampard and Essien in support would be a big threat. And that threat broke the fortress with a superb free kick by Drogba at the 39th minute. It was not only until the 70th minutes that Spurs managed to break through compliments from a handball by Wayne Bridge and Berbatov made no mistake this time. after that, it was cruise control, defending all the way in order to go into extra time. What else could anyone ask for to be scoring the first goal for the club, the winning goal in a final like that. At extra time, it was just a matter of who cracks and who don't, who wants it more than the other, this time it was Spurs, it was Woodgate who made it 2-1 at the 94th minute when he headed in the goal. Spurs clinged on dangerously for the remaining of the game and eventually that succeded. Tottenham Hotspur - Winner of the Carling Cup 2007/2008. Very well, and deservingly so. |
