In retrospect, last 2 days have seen a couple of upsets and nearly has beens for which the Champions League Quarterfinals have been played. Every match played has have its ups and downs and drama packed. One thing for sure, the Barcelona and Schalke match would perhaps be the most straightforward one of all. A 1 nil victory over in Germany before winning by the same goal line in the Nou camp, Barcelona is the remaining team left in an already over crowded English dominated Semi Finals. For Manchester United, who also convincingly beat AS Roma with a 2 zero victory in Roma before winning with another goal at Old Trafford. If Roma hadn’t missed the penalty, it would have been a different ball game altogether. But they did, and then Carlos Tevez scored the only goal of the second leg. With a 3 goal cushion, there will no turning back for the Romans. So the remaining Italian team left in the Champions League crashed out. So there they have it then, semi-finals 1, Manchester United vs Barcelona. Mouth watering as it may be, this would be one of the classic clashes. Chelsea would also have had quite a straightforward fixture in this round. Although they suffered a 1-2 defeat in Fenerbahce, they came back convincingly at Stamford Bridge with a 2 goal margin. Ballack and Lampard’s goal both kept the visitors at bay and won the tie and march the Blues to their third semi-finals in four years. The most dramatic game of them all would be the Arsenal vs Liverpool clash. With the game tied at 1-1 at the Emirates, it was the Reds who would have the upper hand holding the 1 away goal advantage. But as drama goes, Arsenal came stomping into Anfield with an early lead before Hyppia scored the equalizer and having Torres scored the second goal, Liverpool was almost sure of a semi-final spot. Until Walcott did that wonder run to pass the ball for Adebayor to score the equalizer again. From this point, it is now the Gunners going to the semis. Until a penalty claim saw Gerrard scoring from the spot, and before Babel put in the fourth goal to seal the tie with the Reds winning the aggregate 5-3. That leaves the other semi-final clash, for the third time in four years, Liverpool vs Chelsea. |
